Question: I think my wife diabetes, have than you always thirsty. Are there different types of diabetes and what other warning signs are?

Answer: Many people can have diabetes and don't know it as thirsty as some of the early signs seem the seriously. We recommend your wife talk to your doctor or qualified health professional, as a simple blood test detects if there is excess glucose. Research shows patients at a higher risk of developing diabetes are over 40 years old.

There are three types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is on usually diagnosed during childhood and teenage years and delivers if the pancreas to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. The body produces glucose from food you eat to give your body energy, but needs insulin to use it. About 10 percent of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown; However, we know it is unavoidable, and it is not caused by eating too much sugar. Anyone with type 1 diabetes must take insulin.

The remaining 90% have diabetes type 2 that occurs when the pancreas produces enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use insulin, which produces. Type 2 diabetes developed in adulthood, although more and more children in high-risk populations is diagnosed. People with type 2 diabetes can manage your condition with lifestyle changes like eat healthy and be physically active. Take also oral diabetes medications or insulin.

The third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes and occurs during pregnancy. It is usually a temporary condition. Less than four percent of all pregnancies are complicated by gestational diabetes. Women who have had gestational diabetes are much more likely to type 2 diabetes later in life, to develop as your children.

Some other warning signs are overweight (especially around your middle), parent, brother or sister with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or other fats in the blood, giving birth to a baby had gestational diabetes over 4 kg (9 lbs).

Signs that you may diabetes or high blood glucose levels feeling more thirsty include frequent urination, a sudden change in weight, either a profit or loss, lack of energy or tired more than usually, blurred vision, infections are more common or recurring, injuries such as cuts and bruises that are slow to heal, tingling or no feeling in your hands or feet

Remember many people - the diabetes have show none of these symptoms. So don't just watch for signs - know the risk factors. Regular annual laboratory screening can diagnose diabetes before you begin after symptoms. This often happens when your annual physical examination.

The deficiencies observed in the study of diabetes related to pregnancy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – just over two-thirds of pregnant women have undergone screening tests for gestational diabetes, according to a new analysis of almost one million patients ' records.

About five percent of women who tested positive for pregnancy-related diabetes just one in five were re-examined within six months after birth, Dr. John m. Nakamoto of Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute in San Juan Capistrano, California, and his colleagues found.

In particular, of the findings, told Reuters Health Nakamoto, given that a recent large study, Hyperglycemia and adverse pregnancy outcome (HAPO) experience shows that even subtle defects in the metabolism of glucose of the mother during pregnancy, led to health problems for mother and baby. Women who have gestational diabetes are also at increased risk for the future development of type 2 diabetes, he adds.

At present, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Diabetes Association recommends that screening pregnant women for gestational diabetes and women who develop diabetes mellitus associated with pregnancy should be tested six to 12 weeks after delivery, babies.

Laboratory now are most commonly used for screening is 100 g oral glucose tolerance test. Woman drinks heavily sweetened beverages, and then its blood is tested; If at least two tests show abnormally high glucose levels, it shall be deemed to have gestational diabetes.

But now is recommended by the International Association of diabetes and pregnancy study groups, on the basis of the results of a study that different HAPO test-75 g oral glucose tolerance--is used instead, with just a single abnormally high blood glucose results indicate pregnancy-related diabetes.

On the basis of the guidelines, noted Nakamoto, about twice as many women shall be deemed to have gestational diabetes, compared with those who are diagnosed with the test, per 100 g.

In their study, Nakamoto and his team looked at Quest Diagnostics testing data for pregnant women 25 to 40 years (younger women are considered to be at low risk for gestational diabetes), including nearly 925,000 women in all old.

According to their report in the journal in obstetrics and gynaecology, 68% (almost 843,000) have passed the oral glucose tolerance test and five per cent had gestational diabetes.

Women 35 to 40 years are almost twice as likely to have gestational diabetes women 18 to 24, until the risk to women, weighing more than 275 pounds is more than triple, to women who weigh 100-124 pounds. Asian women also are almost double the risk of gestational diabetes, compared to white.

Among the more than 23,000 patients tested positive for gestational diabetes and continued to receive laboratory tests of Quest Diagnostics, within six months from the date of their maturity just 19 percent have been tested for the first, diabetes, researchers found.

"Our national basis study shows that pregnancy rates and the first screening of pregnant women are much less than the recommended guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Diabetes Association, Nakamoto and his team type. "It is also important to note that the proportion of women with (gestational diabetes mellitus services) diagnosed returning for the first test is extremely low."

United States preventive services task force-the Government agency that issues recommendations on screening tests--currently States that the existing data is not strong enough to recommend all pregnant women receive the survey for gestational diabetes.

But given the recent study, Nakamoto notes, this group, most likely to revise their recommendation. "Now you have the results of the database by very large international research that is conducted over the last few years. These data, I think you really look at what is now add task force for the results of the database to show that he made a difference. "

MADISON, N.J., 20 Dec. 2010/PRNewswire/--nearly one-third of pregnant women are not verified by simple laboratory test for diabetes gestational diabetes (gestational diabetes), according to more than 900,000 American women published online today in obstetrics and gynaecology.? The study, conducted by scientists of Quest Diagnostics (DGX LARGEST:-News), suggests that many women are not examined in accordance with the guidelines, medical and captures it can put themselves and their babies at risk for complications of gestational diabetes.

The study, entitled "Gaps in diabetes screening during pregnancy and the first, also found that only one of five women who develop gestational diabetes while pregnant were screened for diabetes within six months of the completion of their pregnancy. Medical guidelines recommend that women with gestational diabetes are screened for diabetes between six and the first 12 weeks. Estimated 40 to 60 per cent of women with gestational diabetes type 2 diabetes will be developed in ten years.(I)

"Regardless of ethnic origin, age, weight or many pregnant women are not examined in accordance with the guidelines on gestational diabetes, a condition that can lead to adverse health effects for the mother and child," said study investigator John m. Nakamoto, M.D., Ph.d., Medical Director, Quest Diagnostics.

"We were particularly alarmed to discover that develop the condition while pregnant women are not be screened for diabetes, despite the overwhelming evidence first, that there is a high risk for developing diabetes later in life," said Dr. Nakamoto. "Discussion of diabetes public health crisis, failure to check these women after their pregnancy is a major concern.

The study assessed the results of testing of de-identified the 924,873 identified as pregnant women aged between 25 and 40 who have been tested by Quest Diagnostics Laboratory. This is the first published study on gestational diabetes screening rates for diabetes, and the first for the general population that is not limited to data, hospital or insurance network.

Other key findings:

Many women at risk for gestational diabetes: investigators found that in the population of the study 4.9 per cent of women, appropriately aged between 18 and 40 – or around 41,000 women national – had gestational diabetes.

The number of women with gestational diabetes would nearly double in accordance with the guidelines of the research: the survey also offers, the number of women with gestational diabetes are almost doubled, according to the new criteria for screening, through the use of an oral glucose tolerance 75 g of the International Association of diabetes and pregnancy study groups.? The criteria are based in part on the results of hyperglycemia and adverse pregnancy outcome (HAPO) experience student associations between maternal reactions in respect of the testing of glucose tolerance, and adverse health outcomes for mothers and young children.

Obese women have the highest risk for gestational diabetes but are least likely to check: women with more than 275 lbs weight during their pregnancy were 12% less likely to be checked, but 348 per cent more likely to have gestational diabetes than those weighing between 100-124 lbs. weight women with the mother of 250 274 lbs was 6 per cent less likely to be checked, but more likely to have gestational diabetes than women in the Group lightweight 300 percent. According to the American College of obstetrics and gynaecology (ACOG) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the weight is one factor in a woman risk for gestational diabetes.

Ethnicity is stronger prognozator gestational diabetes of the mother of mass: positivity rate for gestational diabetes in Asian American women is 8.7 per cent, compared to 4.1 percent for African American women. Maternal weight is approximately 137 lbs in Asia women, compared with 175 lbs African American women. Spanish American women is positivity about 5.4% and the average weight of the mother of 156 lbs. Caucasian American women had to have a degree of 4.2%, with the mother average weight around 163 lbs.

"Our study Highlights that many factors could affect a woman risk for gestational diabetes. It is important for women and doctors to understand the risks specific to each child in order to assess the potential value of clinically appropriate screening, "said study investigator Harvey w. Kaufman, M.D., Director of the higher Quest Diagnostics. ' Diabetes in epidemic proportions, the need for patients to empower themselves by better understanding of their individual risk for this disease has never been more compelling. "

Gestational diabetes mellitus is diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. It occurs in a 4% and 12% of pregnancies. Untreated gestational diabetes increases the risk of pre-eclampsia, premature birth, delivery problems requiring cesarean section and Neonatal hypoglycemia. May be treated by controlling the gestational diabetes glucose with diet, exercise or insulin treatment. Guidelines recommended testing during and after pregnancy include tolerance for oral glucose and blood tests that are widely available through the United States laboratories.

The survey is now online and in the January 2007 print issue of obstetrics and gynaecology is the official publication of ACOG.
