Exercise can help limit pregnancy weight gain

NEW YORK (Reuters Health)-Being physically active while pregnant can help women gain a little less weight, according to a new survey of new research.

Integration of research results, for the 12 researchers in Munich, Germany, found that women who exercised while pregnant gained an average of 1.3 pounds less than women who do not.

This alone might not be much of an incentive for women that take account of the exercise while she was pregnant, but there are other reasons to do it, "said Dr. Michael Kramer of McGill University in Montreal which reviewed the findings on Reuters Health.

Scientific studies show that exercise can have a positive impact on mood and insulin sensitivity in all human beings and seems to have no negative effects on women during pregnancy, noted Kramer, which also is scientific director of the Institute of human development, child and youth health at Canadian Institutes for health research.

Exercise can help women keep their pre-pregnancy conditioning.

"Women who were physically active can continue, and women who cannot start," said Kramer. "But they should not expect major results for them or for their baby."

Women who have too much weight during pregnancy are at risk of a number of problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure and labor complications.

A recent study also found that women who gained more weight during pregnancy gave birth to a heavier babies, which are themselves more likely to become obese adults. They may also be more susceptible to cancer, allergies and asthma.

To investigate if the exercise programs help women to avoid problems that comes from too much profit of weight, INA Streuling Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and colleagues reviewed data from the 12 studies that looked at the effect of intervention for the exercise of women during pregnancy.

Collective research compared more than 1000 women, some of which have been assigned to follow the exercise program.

Programs encourage women to pursue approximately three times a week, within one hour of aerobics, running, biking or strengthening of the muscles, starting from the first or second quarter.

Research has shown that regular exercise is associated with less weight gain during pregnancy, but overall review data trend direction, said Kramer, who has not participated in the study.

And some women lose more than the average of 1.3 pounds Streuling said in particular Reuters Health--women who are overweight or obese before pregnancy.

"Prevention of open (weight gain), pregnant women to be physically active," Streuling shown in email with Reuters Health.

The results appear in the journal for pregnancy BJOG.

They shall carry out an analysis involving studies are combined and the physical activity and dietary counseling and open women who follow this programme gained nearly three pounds less while pregnant.

Kramer co-authored a recent survey, which also reviewed previous studies on the effects of the exercise of the child. The study "essentially found the same thing", but the results are too weak to be ruled out that the trend is likely to be due to random chance, not true effect of the exercise of pregnancy, Kramer noted.

Not surprisingly, the share that exercise will only have only a small impact on weight gain during pregnancy, he explains--really what matters is not only how many women work but also how much they eat. "If you make a lot of exercise, you will get hungrier. So, unless you have cut of what you eat, you will lose weight. "

In addition, not all included studies are of high quality, noted Streuling and some women who are not included in the program for the exercise may have been generally more active in their daily life, which may also explain why the exercise seems to have little impact on weight during pregnancy.

Even if the exercise is generally safe during pregnancy, extreme sports, contact and other intense exercise such as marathons and iron Man is probably not a good idea, added Kramer.
